ASU’s Annual Presidential Bus Tour provides higher education opportunities for high school students
ALBANY, Ga. – Albany State University (ASU) opens its doors to local high school students, inviting them to explore opportunities for higher education.
ASU concludes its Annual Presidential Bus Tour, greeting students from Dougherty Comprehensive High School, Monroe Comprehensive High School, and Westover High School with open arms. The tour provided valuable insights into ASU’s degree programs, financial aid options, and admissions procedures, all while fostering meaningful connections with key members of the campus community.
“The goal for the Presidential Bus Tour is for us to touch those nearby cities that are sometimes looked over when it comes to colleges and universities recruiting students. So, we try to hit those close by cities to bring the Ram spirit to them. We bring academic departments, we bring Greek Life, we bring student leaders, financial aid, admissions so they can get the full experience of the ram life, the “RAMily,” as well as just the college experience. We give them the opportunity to also get accepted on the spot. So, we want them to be able to just have that option to apply and to just have that accept it so that at least they know, “okay, I was accepted to [Albany] State University,” said Shelbi Ham, ASU Associate Director of Recruitment.
Having traveled to various locations in Georgia earlier this week, the Presidential Bus Tour engaged with Westside High School in Macon, Terrell County High School in Dawson, and Macon County High School in Montezuma.
Shelbi Hame, Associate Director of Recruitment at ASU, sheds light on the array of programs and resources tailored to support incoming freshman at the university.
“At Albany State University we have the university college. So, they basically lead the students through the first year of college here at Albany State. We also have Summer Success Academy Program. The freshmen come back for six weeks, and they take classes like about three classes and then they do field trips, different types of activities. So, basically get that hands-on experience before everyone comes back on the campus,” said Ham.
Ham offers valuable advice to high school seniors preparing for higher education pursuits.
“Make sure that you explore all of your options, because you never know, something that you might not be interested in or you might not think you may be interested in, you actually may love. And, you do campus tours. You visit to kind of get a real feel of the campus because you really won’t know until you come and see the campus. And so I always tell people, when you go visit Albany State, you will feel nothing but that family feel,” said Ham.
