Cordele-Crisp Chamber of Commerce prepares to celebrate “In My Drug Free Era” Red Ribbon Week
CORDELE, Ga. – The Cordele-Crisp Chamber of Commerce prepares for the upcoming week dedicated to promoting drug free living.
Red Ribbon Week will kick off on Monday, a campaign focused on raising awareness about substance abuse prevention and encouraging healthy choices.
“Red Ribbon Week started when a drug enforcement officer was brutally killed. Since then, the red ribbon has been the symbol for drug awareness. This has been going on for over 30 years. And, our chamber has participated in every one of them,” said Monica Simmons, President, Cordele-Crisp Chamber of Commerce.
This year’s Red Ribbon Week theme, “In My Drug Free Era,” will take the spotlight as the chamber organizes various events, funded by its members. One highlight will be an event at the Crisp County Primary School.
“We will have our kickoff at the primary school on October 28, beginning at 9 a.m. We actually provide the pencils and the ribbons and stickers for Pre-K through 12th grade. And, so, every year, these students are reminded on Red Ribbon Week about the dangers of drugs. The sheriff will be speaking and the police chief will be speaking. And, then, Clay Johnson from Peniel Recovery Ministries will be speaking as one of our presenting sponsors,” said Simmons.
The chamber has also planned an interactive activity for the entire Cordele community.
“We have purchased some red ducks to represent Red Ribbon Week and we’re going to be hiding these ducks around town. And, we are going to put the clues on our chamber Facebook page CordeleCrispChamber to give clues on where the ducks are located,” said Simmons.
Monica Simmons, President of the Cordele-Crisp Chamber of Commerce, shares details about the kickoff event that will officially launch this year’s Red Ribbon Week.
“And, then, we work with law enforcement. We’ve got a Red Block coming up on October 25th, which will actually kick off the event. It is going to begin at 9 a.m. on Highway 41 South around the (Cordele) Lions Club fairgrounds. There will be all kinds of public safety folks there from the sheriff’s department, the police department, city and county fire departments, and EMS. We stop traffic both ways and we have ribbons that we tie on vehicles. And, so, we just try to, you know, get the word out and remind people that, you know, we want Cordele-Crisp County to be a drug free community,” said Simmons.
