September is Responsible Dog Ownership Month

RAY CITY, Ga. – September is Responsible Dog Ownership Month, so we consulted with Kayla Lackey, founder of South Georgia Animal Services in Ray City, about a few things every dog owner should know that might help them take better care of their 4-legged friends.

“Responsible dog ownership is really about looking at the dog in front of you. It means meeting their physical, medical, and behavioral needs, keeping them safe and identifiable, and being willing to learn and ask for help when you need it,” said Ms. Lackey.

Some of the suggestions are:

• Provide Proper Care – Food, water, and shelter are the bare minimum

• Veterinary Care – Annual vaccines and checkups

• Spay and Neuter – Prevents unwanted litters and has other health benefits

• Identification – Up-to-date ID tags and microchips

• Training and Socialization – Good manners matter

• Safety – Secure fencing, proper leash use, and NEVER leave alone in locked cars

• Respect – Always bring a baggy and pick up poop in public

“None of us are perfect dog owners 100% of the time, but there’s always something we can do to help our dogs live safer, healthier, better lives. Throughout September, we’ll be sharing tips and resources on things like microchipping, vaccinations, spay and neuter, training, enrichment, containment, emergency planning, and more on our Facebook page,” said Ms. Lackey.
