ALBANY, Ga. – At a Sunday afternoon press conference, Albany City Manager Stephen Carter announced that the remains of missing Albany Public Works employee 36-year-old Darrious Stephens had been recovered on the Baker county side of the Flint River around 10:30 a.m. this morning.
Full press conference:
Albany Fire Chief Cedric Scott said he was informed by the DNR that they discovered Stephens’ body two miles south of Punk’s Landing in Baker County.
Recovery was accomplished by AFD Dive Team.
Stephens’ body was discovered in a pile of debris around the landing.
Albany city officials including members of the Albany Fire Department (AFD), Albany Police Department (APD), and Department of Natural Resources (DNR) say the search had been going on for 20 days.
Stephens first went missing on Monday, Feb. 12, while conducting water samples in the Flint River during heavy rainfall.
Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler said Stephens’ body has been transported to the Dougherty County morgue.
Coroner Fowler says the GBI will be handling the autopsy to determine a cause of death, and foul play hasn’t been ruled out yet.
The loss of a member of the community is felt by all and extend their thoughts and prayers to Stephens’ family and Public Works, extending their gratitude to first responders who have worked around the clock during the recovery efforts over the last few weeks.
According to Fire Chief Cedric Scott says it’s important to note that search for 23-year-old Cameron Jones will continue.
Jones disappeared on Monday, Feb. 26, when witnesses say he “walked into” or “jumped into” the river.
