City of Moultrie to take extra precautions during Second Saturday event

MOULTRIE, Ga. – Despite rising COVID-19 cases in Colquitt County, Moultrie’s Second Saturday event is going on as planned. However, Moultrie city officials are saying they’re taking extra precautions this Saturday to ensure everybody has a fun, safe experience in the downtown area. An area that is in desperate need of visitors.
“Our small businesses need all the support we can give them,” says city manager Peter Dillard.
Second Saturday was established as a way to encourage people to the downtown area. And now, during the pandemic, it’s needed more than ever.
“Our downtown businesses, like all small businesses, have taken a beating during this virus.”
And not only have businesses suffered but the unprecedented pandemic has discouraged many people from getting out and having some fun.
“People can get out, they can live their lives, not the way we used to, but in a responsible manner so that we can move ahead.”
Dillard says Second Saturday will provide some much needed relief for both businesses and residents but with a few added precautions. The city is setting up sanitation stations, handing out hand sanitizer and providing masks.
“Our downtown staff will be there, many of our City Hall staff, a number of our police officers will be there and we will be reminding people of the 3 W’s.”
- Wash your hands
- Wear a mask
- Watch your distance
Hosting the event was discussed with local health officials and the city believes the turn out will be lower than the previous Second Saturday, making it easier to monitor the event.
“We don’t have to lock down, we can take middle ground as long as people are responsible, respectable and considerate.”
The only thing stopping Second Saturday from taking over this weekend is bad weather so follow the city’s Facebook page for any updates on the event.
The live performance will start at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 11, at the amphitheater on the Courthouse Square. Bringing your own chairs is also recommended to encourage social distancing.
