City of Moultrie warns residents of phone scams

MOULTRIE, Ga. – The City of Moultrie is warning residents about possible phone scams. City officials have received reports from customers saying they were called by someone claiming to be the City of Moultrie.

“People are call posing as Georgia Power, EMC or the city,” says City Manager Peter Dillard.

During the calls, the suspected scammer is telling people to give card information immediately, or the resident’s power to their homes will be turned off.

Dillard says the city will never ask someone to wire money to an account or to pay over the phone with a card.

“Early on in the COVID-19 crisis we did call people rather than turn off their power if they had not paid. Now, we’re not doing that anymore so if you get a call from the City of Moultrie saying ‘if you don’t pay today you’ll be cut off,’ it’s a scam call. Hang up immediately.”

Dillard says if you suspect you’ve been contacted by a scammer to notify the city by calling 229-985-1974 and asking to speak with Joy Warnock, Director of Business Operations. Dillard says Warnock “can verify if people need to actually pay a bill” with the city.
