Sumter County Emergency Management officials urge residents to prepare for colder weather

AMERICUS, Ga. – Sumter County Emergency Management officials urge residents to prepare for colder weather beginning Monday night, with temperatures expected to drop to a low of 19 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service, Americus and Sumter County are not expected to experience snow or ice. However, residents are advised not to let their guard down, as temperatures will drop significantly overnight starting Monday night.

Additionally, on Sunday, the area could experience isolated severe storms, with a Level 1 of 5 (Marginal Risk) from Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening.

Warming Shelter Information

To ensure the safety of residents, warming shelters will be available for individuals and families in need of a safe place during the cold weather. Additional shelters are expected to open in various areas of the city and county.

Residents seeking shelter are encouraged to bring essential items such as medications, identification, personal hygiene items, and bedding.
