NAACP condemns ASU homecoming deadly shooting
ALBANY, Ga. – Local chapters of the NAACP are coming together to denounce the shooting that took place near the Student Union on Albany State University’s East Campus last weekend.
Chairmen of the Dougherty, Sumter and Crisp County chapters of the NAACP came together this afternoon to deliver a statement condemning the violence that took place on October 19th.
The shooting left one 19-year-old dead and four others injured from gunfire.
Chapter leaders are calling on communities to come together so they can find a solution to curb the violence.
We got a chance to speak with them this afternoon about the call to action.
“We’re saying for the black community, it’s time for us as leaders to come together and see what we can do as leaders to prevent these things from continuing to happen in the black community,” said Eugene Edge Jr., President, Sumter Co. NAACP.
“And, in the future, we plan on meeting with all our local chiefs, our local sheriffs to bring them to the table for a plan of action. Also, too, we’re going to march, we’re going to rally, we’re going to protest, and we’re also going to support the family of the victims in any way we can. Whether that’s directing to them to the right support system, even anything as far as fundraising for the victims in the future as well too,” said Tracy Taylor, Albany-Dougherty NAACP.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has yet to identify a suspect in the shooting at this time.
The investigation is still active.
