Investigation ongoing into deadly ASU Homecoming shooting, no arrest made

ALBANY, Ga. – What should have been the big end to Albany State University’s homecoming week was instead marred by violence as several people were shot on the east campus.

We spoke with several Albany State students Monday morning about the shooting.

“It’s very unfortunate because it’s how everybody just came down to show love, you know, build the bridges between each other and network. So, pretty much, you know, fulfill their destiny or why they here. So, very unfortunate,” said Dewayne Edwards, Senior, ASU.

“When I was out here, it was like an abundance of people. And, I didn’t really see, like, security a lot like that, you know what I’m saying? So, I don’t know. I feel it was kind of like I seen a lot of people and I talked to a lot of people today saying that they’re scared and everything. You know what I’m saying?” said Carl Pierre Jr., Senior, ASU.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), four people between the ages of 13 and 20 years old were shot Saturday night.

Another 19-year-old girl was injured while attempting to flee, but was not shot.

One person, 19-year-old De’marius Daniels, who was not an ASU student, was killed during the altercation.

Albany Police Chief Michael Persley sent us a written statement Monday morning saying…

“We offer our thoughts and prayers to all the family members of the victims involved in this incident. Especially those who were traumatized by this tragic act. This act of violence does Not reflect the values of Albany State University, its staff, or its student body. The ASU Campus is a space of learning and growth, not of fear.”

Back on campus, students are sharing the same sentiment about this senseless act that left a group of adolescents injured and one dead.

“That’s scary, you know, what I’m saying? Like we’re supposed to be on a campus. We’re supposed to be like, you know, secure and safe, you know, and I feel like, they just got to do better,” said Pierre Jr.

“Yeah, that’s not a reflection of Albany State, because I’ve never seen anything like that before. It’s just, it’s hard for it to happen and all,” said Jaida Rodgers, Sophomore, ASU.

Unfortunately no suspect has been named at this time, but local law enforcement is assisting the GBI with the investigation.

Anyone with any information is encouraged to contact Albany State University’s Police Department at 229-430-4711 or the GBI’s anonymous tip line at 1-800–597-8477.

CBS 44 News South Georgia offers its deepest condolences to the victims of this tragedy.
