Albany Housing Authority announces plans to build 500 homes in next 5 years
ALBANY, Ga. – The Albany Housing Authority is bringing big changes to the city’s landscape.
At a recent press conference, the housing authority offered a comprehensive overview of its strategic plan for the next five years.
“Southwest Georgia, especially Albany, we have an extremely high rental rate. We have an extremely high poverty rate. And, at some point, the people that are here, the leaders in the community, somebody have to stand up to the plate and begin to address some of these issues,” said Dr. William Myles, CEO, Albany Housing Authority.
Dr. William Myles, CEO of the Albany Housing Authority, highlighted the crucial role housing plays in fostering family stability.
“And, we’re looking to utilize our platform to begin to address some of those issues because we understand that housing stabilizes them and that’s what we want to do. Because, it is hard to gain that education when you worried about where you’re going to live. It’s hard to figure out how to behave in the classroom when you don’t know where you’re going to sleep. So, housing becomes crucial and critical in times like these, especially in communities such as these,” said Dr. Myles.
Dr. Myles details the housing authority’s plan to revitalize several housing developments in the community.
“And, we initiated an initiative called five in five. And what we’re looking to do is establish 500 new units within the next five years. And these new units are going to be across the spectrum of housing platforms. The initiative will be looking at trying to establish veteran housing, senior housing, of course some multifamily housing, workforce housing, but also single family homes. We think at minimum, those things are crucial and beginning to develop and shape our communities. And, please understand, we’re not looking to build developments. We’re not looking to build buildings, but we’re looking to build communities,” said Dr. Myles.
The housing authority remains committed to continuing their efforts to serve the community.
“It’s time for us to step up to the plate. Make a commitment, stand to that community and provide services to the residents here that they rightfully deserve,” said Dr. Myles.
