UGA Tifton Campus holds mural unveiling event for 20th anniversary

TIFTON, Ga. – A new captivating mural has been unveiled at the UGA Campus in Tifton.

Students, staff, and art enthusiasts all gathered at the UGA Tifton Campus for the unveiling of a new commemorative mural, symbolizing a pivotal moment in the celebration of 20 years of academic programs.

“So, this mural represents the strong connection that the UGA Tifton Campus has with the University of Georgia at large. It’s meant to represent our teaching program and all of the great things that happen here with undergraduate as well as graduate teaching. And, also to underscore, as you can see, everything from campus along with the things that we do with cotton and peanuts and all the other kind of crops that we support here at the Tifton campus,” said Nick Place, UGA CAES Dean & Director.

Local artist, Jill Whitley, renowned for her work on the painted bulldogs surrounding Tifton, created the mural symbolizing two decades of learning and scholarship at the UGA Tifton Campus.

Nick Place, Dean & Director of the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at UGA, shares insights into the message behind the artwork.

“What we hope that this conveys is the strong connection of the UGA Tifton Campus with the University of Georgia at large, and that this place is a very special place and it’s an opportunity for young people to come here to study and to learn about things that are really pertinent and important to south Georgia. And, to give them an opportunity to connect with some of the world’s best renowned researchers that we have here in order to make them society ready graduates to move out and make a real difference for our agriculture industry,” said Place.

Nick place elaborates on UGA’s commitment to preparing the next generation of workers for the future of agriculture.

“With the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences that I’m a part of, we are really seen as the research and development arm for the number one industry in the state, which is agriculture. So, our job is to conduct cutting edge research as well as training the next generation of students and extending that knowledge out to producers and families here all across the state, but particularly here in south Georgia,” said Place.
