ALBANY, Ga. – In celebration of National Hot Dog Day, Albany Technical College hosted a hot dog cooking competition where students got a chance to showcase their culinary skills and be crowned the ‘Top Dawg’.
Executive Chef, Lead Instructor, and Department Chair of Albany Technical College Culinary Arts, Matt Beard, gives more information about the competition.
“We were looking more for creativity more than we were anything else. Stepping outside of the box, not just doing the typical chili dog, slaw dog; but looking at the creators of things like the Sonoran Dog, the Seattle Dog, and the Chicago Dog and coming up with our own idea that stepped outside the box. I’m hoping one of my students’ dogs are gonna make it into the history books as being the next dog created at Albany Tech and in Georgia,” Beard said.
The contestants were given 45 minutes to create an original recipe, which would be judged based on presentation, creativity, taste, and sanitation.

“It makes you feel good whenever anyone tells you that your food is good. But when you’ve got experts in the field telling you that your food is good, it really makes you feel good. I actually started to tear up a little bit listening to some of the judges comments because I was so proud of my students. They did step up, they stepped out, and they did show out a bit and I’m proud of them,” said Beard.
