Winter planting made easy

ALBANY, Ga. – If you’re an at home florist or just enjoy plants and flowers…

Keeping them in top shape during winter can be tricky.

But, there are some simple steps you can take to help keep them healthy and thriving.

“As far as the winter goes, basically anything that’s not for hours is only if they’re potted plants. They can be brought inside or covered up with frost blankets. Then, keep the temperature a little bit warmer and keep frost off,” said Brian Wright, Manager, Mark’s Greenhouse Nursery & Landscaping.

Other helpful tips include adding a thicker layer of mulch, sticking to a winter watering schedule, and covering smaller plants with bubble wrap.

Most importantly, if possible, bring your plants indoors. Extreme weather can be harsh on them, and protecting them is key.

“Yeah, for sure. Definitely want to bring them inside. If you have any kind of grow lights or something to give them some artificial light. And, definitely, you know, keep the temperature above 40 degrees,” said Wright.

The best flowers to plant in January include pansies, violas, Iceland poppies, stock, and English daisies, to name a few.

Just be sure to nurture the life within the soil, whether you have existing plants or are planning to grow new ones.
