Ward 6 City Commission holds town hall meeting to discuss proposed housing developments
ALBANY, Ga. – In a significant development for the City of Albany, new housing developments are set to grace the landscape for the first time in nearly 25 years.
The City of Albany Commission for Ward 6 conduct an informative session addressing the proposed home building project in collaboration with innovation housing solutions.
Commissioner Demetrius Young, the representative for Ward 6 where the development is slated, emphasizes that this is an opportunity the City of Albany cannot afford to overlook.
“Of course, South Albany is an area that was hit, devastated by the 1994 flood. And ever since then, we have not been able to see new housing being built on this side of town. This is an opportunity, a unique opportunity, that we can restart that particular subdivision and put houses where houses were meant to be right after the 1994 flood,” said Demetrius Young, Ward 6 City Commissioner.
The proposal intends to have the City of Albany donate over 100 city owned-housing lots in the unfinished River Road Subdivision. Prospective homeowners will have to qualify for a mortgage through new homeowner programs provided by IHA and the City of Albany Community and Economic Development Department.
Commissioner Demetrius Young elaborates on the importance to improve housing standards within Ward 6, emphasizing its role in elevating the overall quality of life for residents.
“We have a lot of poor and older housing stock here in Albany, Georgia. This means we have housing that has been built, late sixties, seventies, on up to the eighties. And, that housing now is absolutely, kind of crumbling under our feet. Which leads to a lot of different issues for our citizens. High utility bills because their houses aren’t energy efficient and, for our elderly and retired folks, they are living in housing that is substandard. So, we really need to push new development of housing, rehabilitation of our older housing and give our citizens a better quality of life,” said Young.
