United Way of Southwest Georgia’s Glow Up For Mental Health

ALBANY, Ga. – The United Way of Southwest Georgia is giving an outlet to local teenagers with a program called Glow Up For Mental Health.

Program coordinator, Jade Ragin tells us they’ve been doing more programs like this to help teenagers…

With advice from teens themselves.

“One of the youth… She pretty much made this event from scratch. It was all her idea. And she decided that she wanted something to where teens could have free range, have fun. Just do things they wanted to do during the daytime that their parents might not be able to afford or take them to during the day. Bring their family, and come by and just have a great time,” Jade Ragin, Special Projects Asst., United Way of Southwest Georgia.

It’s no secret that the city of Albany hasn’t been safe for teens to be out during the evening, especially downtown.

That’s why the united way is hoping a program like this will start to change that.

“These are things they might not be able to do often times that they want to do. So, it is important that we, as a community, have these events for them so that they have exposure to the things they want to do. Going out, having friends in a safe environment. Like you said, sometimes Albany isn’t recognized as one of the safest places, but we are such a gem. It’s such a beautiful community. So we want the kids to come out and see the good side of Albany, and not always hear about the bad and the negatives…” said Ragin.

And… at the end of it all, the United Way and the young adult organizers who are setting up glow up for mental health want it to be about one thing: positivity.

“So, ideally, they focus on having these fun events that kids are drawn to but leave with a positive message as well…” said Ragin.

Jade says they’re looking forward to the program and are hoping for a large turnout to give teens and young adults a chance to go out safely.

Glow Up For Mental Health will take place next Thursday, July 18th starting at 6 pm on North Front Street.
