United Way of Southwest Georgia Youth United
ALBANY, Ga. – The United Way of Southwest Georgia is beginning one of their biggest programs of the year involving local high school students. And, this year, they’re going bigger in hoping to attract high schoolers from across the area.
Starting Monday, the United Way has opened up registration for their annual Youth United program, geared towards helping high school students.
And… this year’s iteration is going beyond schools within the city of Albany.
“It is very important now that we are able to expand that and people kind of know exactly what we’re trying to do or are trying to get some interest or they want some other kids to come in. It’s very important that we’re able to provide the service for everybody because it’s just as important in Albany as it is outside of Albany, and vice versa,” said Jade Ragin, Special Projects Manager, United Way of SWGA.
What isn’t changing though is what Youth United is geared towards when it comes to providing high school students with opportunities.
“Youth United is our youth coalition for high school students here in Albany, Georgia. Well, it started here in Albany, Georgia, but we’re extending our application to all the surrounding counties now so it can be anybody in this area. But, we pretty much do specialized events for teens in Albany so we can give them, you know, extracurricular activities. So, they can have something to do outside of school,” said Ragin.
But… it isn’t just extracurriculars that the united way is lending a hand with as they want to give students opportunities to give back to the community and focus on their mental health as well.
“Community service is something that’s very important, especially here at United Way, Southwest Georgia. We really want to give the kids the opportunity that they might not get in school to do that community service. We service, we know is important for college, you know, for any organizations or anything that you’re trying to do. It’s very important to show that you were in your community and important for them to see the people that they are affecting in their lives or that are just everyday people like them, that they’re able to help by just doing a couple of time or a couple of hours to them,” said Ragin.
For those who are interested, registration will happen through the end of the month, but you’ll need to hurry.
“If you’re interested in getting it, but all you have to do, which is kind of sign in for your kid, they’d have to tell their information, their age. Our basic information is just on a first come, first serve basis, so it’s important that you get in as quick as you can. So, we would appreciate anybody who’s interested in us,” said Ragin.
While space may be limited, the United Way is eager to help impact more lives beyond those in the Good Life City.
