Turner Job Corps looking for volunteers
ALBANY, Ga. – The Turner Job Corps is looking for some extra hands when it comes to helping their students in the classroom after class is over.
Turner Job Corps Academic Supervisor, Deborah Goodson says that while they have a full staff of teachers, some students do need extra help, and with scheduling conflicts, that sometimes isn’t possible.
“…We are also part of that pandemic gap, and instruction gap in learning, and we do have staff. However we do need a little extra assistance with evening and afternoon studies. And, that’s why we are reaching out to our community to see if we can have some volunteer tutors…” said Deborah Goodson, Academic Supervisor, Turner Job Corps.
And, for some students, they don’t want to see their peers potentially fall behind.
“I’ve seen other students who’ve had problems with comprehending things and regular kitchen slang, because I’m in culinary arts. So, I feel like we need more bringing in teachers. I feel like we need more technology when it comes to the reading,” said An’Tamyah Sheppard, Student, Turner Job Corps.
Goodson tells us that in addition to more time spent going over the material, the need for tutors would benefit their student body greatly at the trade school.
“Research shows us that small group instruction is a very effective, evidence-based instructional tool, that will assist with that….” said Goodson.
And in particular, Goodson is hoping that retired educators will step up in the volunteer role…
As it may help some Turner students learn the material more efficiently.
“…That would actually be great. We need that old school charm. Being taught by others. We need more people like Ms. Goodson teaching us in the classrooms,” said Goodson.
While Turner has a full staff, they want to make sure that every one of their students is getting the best possible chance to succeed.
Goodson tells us that they’ll be hosting a Books That Bind event on February 22nd at the Turner Campus in Albany to discuss volunteer tutors.
