Tifton’s Gnat Drop celebration returns New Year’s Eve at Tift County Recreation Department

TIFTON, Ga. – While some cities drop a ball or a peach to welcome the New Year, Tifton has its own tradition… dropping a gnat. The city’s annual Gnat Drop returns tonight, inviting families, friends, and neighbors to gather and celebrate the countdown to 2026 together.

The festivities begin at 6 p.m. at the Tift County Recreation Department, where attendees can enjoy live music, food vendors, and a variety of activities for all ages throughout the evening. The family-friendly event offers a lively atmosphere as the community comes together to close out the year.

As midnight approaches, all eyes will be on “Matt the Gnat,” the event’s beloved mascot, who will make his signature descent in Tifton’s own twist on the classic Times Square ball drop. The countdown will end with a fireworks display, officially welcoming the start of 2026.

Organizers say the Gnat Drop has become a cherished New Year’s Eve tradition in Tifton, offering a fun and local way to celebrate without having to travel far from home.

The event runs from 6 p.m. until midnight at the Tift County Recreation Department, located at 401 Victory Drive. For more information, contact Commissioner Melissa Hughes at 229-326-0241.
