Tift Co. commissioner accepting sock donations for ‘Sock it to ’em with love’ drive

TIFTON, Ga. – The city of Tifton launches a new initiative aimed at making and difference with warm hearts and cozy toes.

Tift County Commissioner, Melissa Hughes, has announced that donations are now being accepted for the ‘Sock it to ‘em with love’ drive.

Commissioner Hughes was inspired to start the sock drive after noticing a need in the community.

“I live right up from JT Reddick and Matt Wilson school, and seeing the children walk to school with the capris on and just tennis shoes and no socks. If you get cold hands and cold feet it is hard to think. And, so, I decided that I would start the sock drive and I’ve been doing this for over ten years,” said Melissa Hughes, Tift Co. Commissioner.

Commissioner Hughes provides details on how to support the sock drive, including when and where to participate.

“We will receive donations up to the very day and we are truly in need of socks. So, if anybody would like to donate, they can please reach me at 229-326-0241. And, that is February 22nd at Mott-Litman Gym, from 1 pm to 5 pm,” said Commissioner Hughes.

Donations of socks for all ages, from children to adults, will be accepted and will be distributed during the sock drive. Families can also look forward to a variety of activities planned for the event.

“Matt the Gnat will be making an appearance and hopefully he will have some of his cartoon friends there as well. We will have free food all the food is being donated by alliance for children. And also we have a bounce house that has been donated by DJ Lee. This year is our first year doing a reading corner for the children. This year we have a surprise guest that will be coming in doing a reading for us,” said Commissioner Hughes.

Commissioner Hughes shared her thoughts on the importance of giving back and why initiatives like the sock drive make a meaningful impact in the community.

“It is such a need right now because everybody is going through something. Parents can barely put food on the table and if they can just receive some socks and some coats or a warm smile, it just makes the community better all in itself. So, giving is just another thing that god requires us to do,” said Commissioner Hughes.
