Thomas University’s Military Transition Football Program
THOMASVILLE, Ga. – Transitioning from the military into civilian life is something that many service members experience, and Thomasville University is helping veterans navigate their next chapter.
Thomas University’s Military Transition Football Program is the first of its kind in the nation, using football as a bridge to help service members transition from military life to civilian careers.
“In 2017, I arrived at Thomas University with our President, Dr. Shepherd, and we had a vision of growing our military enrollment and programing in support of the Department of Defense. And, so, we established the Center for Military Life, which allowed us to build programs in support of service members. So, fast forward to 2021, I believe when we announced football, we decided to create a program that allowed service members the opportunity to play college football. If you look at the dynamic or the makeup of our team, it’s a blend of those that have served and high school students that agree to serve in the National Guard and Reserve components,” said Stephen Ferguson, Vice President for Military and Corporate Relations.
In addition to academic support and career exploration, counseling services continue to be a primary focus of the program. Furthermore, the Veterans Administration will take on a more integrated role, including direct participation in the transition course.
Vice President for Military and Corporate Relations, Stephen Ferguson, shares the motivation behind this initiative.
“So, for me, I was married to the Army for 20 plus years. My spouse separated from service. During our time following the Army around, I worked in voluntary education and I would deal with a lot of veterans and dependents that were looking for ways to ensure that once they left service, the career opportunities were there. And, so, it became a passion to be completely honest with me. It came with passion for me and my duty to assist those that were transitioning out. After all, these are people that volunteered to serve their country,” said Ferguson.
Located within a 200-mile radius of 23 military installations, Thomas University’s program allows service members to apply up to 64 military training credits toward their Bachelor’s degree, enabling them to complete their studies in less than two years.
“There has been no better partner than the Georgia Army National Guard. They are housed on our campus. They have enlisted close to 5060 of our players in the Georgia Army National Guard. And, what an outstanding opportunity for young men and women. And, it’s not just our football players that have taken advantage of it, but other students from other sports or just traditional students. They have created pathways for our students and our football players to enlist, serve 39 days a year in exchange for military service for college tuition. We are here to change lives. We’re here for our nation, service members and their dependents,” said Ferguson.
