Thomas University introduces new Special Education degree programs

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – Thomas University introduces new degree programs providing students with the opportunity to enhance their career prospects.

The college is set to introduce degree programs in Special Education across various disciplines, encompassing science, art, and education as a whole.

“We are opening six different programs in Special Education. And, four of those programs lead to certification in Special Education. So, that’s for individuals who want to be a special education teacher and they’re not already certified in that area. Then we also have two advanced degree programs that will be for current teachers of Special ED who want to get advanced knowledge and skills in that area to better meet the needs of their students in their classroom,” said Susan Lynn, Thomas University Division of Education Chair.

This initiative will empower students to emerge as proficient educational leaders equipped with knowledge to effectively cater to the unique requirements of their students.

Susan Lynn, Division of Education Chair at Thomas University, discusses the rationale behind incorporating these degree programs into the curriculum.

“When we have advisory meetings, they will talk about what we need Special Education teachers for. And, we’ve had potential students contact us to say, “hey, I love Thomas University, I’d really like to come there… But, you don’t offer special education, and that’s, you know, the area that I would like to be certified in.” So, you know, knowing that it’s a high need area, our partners are telling us, students calling about it, we decided we needed to offer those programs. We are trying to meet the needs of our K-12 partners. Special Education is a high need area, which means that school districts all across the State of Georgia need Special Education teachers. And, so, we’re trying to help with that staffing shortage that districts are facing. So, that’s why we’re offering those programs now,” said Lynn.

The program is designed not only to accommodate students with busy schedules, but also to empower them to excel in their careers.

“We’re excited to be opening these programs starting this fall. And, so, we already have applicants in the pipeline and we’re eager to get those processed and get started in the fall. We’re always concerned about trying to reach our K-12 school district partners across rural South Georgia in particular. Our new programs, prepare the elementary level at the middle school level and at the high school level. Often these programs really tie back to the school’s mission of helping prepare our students for careers,” said Lynn.
