Third Annual Kwanzaa Proclamation celebrates cultural tradition
ALBANY, Ga. – Staying in the Good Life City, Dougherty County leaders led a Proclamation for the third annual official celebration of Kwanzaa.
The Proclamation became an annual tradition in Albany and Dougherty county in 2022.
And, members of the black community have been excited to have Kwanzaa be an officially recognized holiday in the city.
We got to speak with two of the women responsible for making this annual Proclamation a reality.
“This is cool. It makes the statement that Kwanzaa is no longer in the closet or people skeptical of it being something anti-religion, because it’s not. It’s a cultural event that celebrates the first fruit of the harvest,” said Helen Young, Albany Planning Commission.
“We can spread this information to cultural information, to young people, to elders. It’s important to have it examined in this fashion. But, we’ve been doing it, and we’ll continue to do it wherever,” said H. Tiajuana Malone, said cultural worker.
Kwanzaa traditionally goes from December 26th to January 1st.
