TEAAMS Monthly Empowerment Session  with Special Guest Speaker Henry Mathis

ALBANY, Ga. – Albany Technical College announces the upcoming TEAAMS Monthly Empowerment Session on Thursday, September 21, from 10:00 am-11:00 am at the Logistics Education Auditorium. Rev. Henry Mathis, a pillar of the Albany community, will be the distinguished speaker at this empowering event.

This session is part of the college’s initiative, Teaching, Empowering African Americans to Succeed (TEAAMS), designed to provide African American Males with fundamental skills to help them succeed and persist through internal and external challenges.

“The TEAAMS Program is grateful to have the unwavering support of our community leaders,” remarked Quanta Bell, the TEAAMS Project Director. “Each month, the TEAAMS project orchestrates a Monthly Empowerment Session where ATC Faculty and esteemed Community Leaders impart wisdom and share experiences with our students.”

About Rev. Henry L Mathis: 

Born and raised in Albany, Rev. Mathis shares a deep bond with his wife Carolyn Wilson Mathis. Together, they are the proud parents of Dearica, Kavisha, Damien, and Henry III. The Mathis lineage includes their cherished grandchildren: Cameron, Kamiya, Mikayla, Payton, and Parker.

A dedicated member of the 2nd MT Zion Baptist Church, Rev. Mathis serves the congregation as an associate minister. He is an Adjunct Professor at Albany State University in the Department of History and Political Science and holds the esteemed positions of President of Elysium Casket Company and President and CEO of Delivery Plus, INC. Furthering his commitment to Albany, he serves on the DFCS Board of Directors, is a former Albany City Commissioner, and is currently a mayoral candidate for 2023.

His educational laurels include a 1972 graduation from Dougherty High and 1981 alumni of Albany State University. He has served the nation as a U.S. Army Veteran and is currently the Service Officer for American Legion Post 512.

Beyond his professional and community pursuits, Rev. Mathis is a renowned Top Master Pool Checker Player and leads as the President of the Albany Pool Checker Club. His passion for sports shines through, as he’s an avid golfer, swimmer, and enthusiast of basketball, softball, and flag football.

A fervent community activist, Rev. Mathis has an innate desire to help and uplift others. He lives by the profound words of Gandhi, believing in and practicing the principle, “Be the Change you wish to see in the World.”

Introducing TEAAMS: As part of a Predominantly Black Institutions (PBI) grant, Albany Technical College embarks on a significant journey with the TEAAMS initiative – Teaching, Empowering African American Males to Succeed. This project aims to enhance the educational outcomes of African American Males by augmenting the enrollment, pass rate, and the number of graduates within this target group. The TEAAMS project is meticulously designed to address five fundamental components:

  2. Mentorships 

  3. Collaborative Learning 

  4. Mental Health 

  1. External Collaborative Partnerships

The overarching goal is to profoundly impact the lives of African American Males, equipping them with requisite resources, skill sets, and social well-being, enabling them to emerge as valuable contributors within their communities.
