Suspect in custody, two injured in drive-by shooting incident Monday afternoon in Fitzgerald
FITZGERALD, Ga. – The Fitzgerald Police Department and the Ben Hill County Sheriff’s Office are currently investigating a shooting incident that occurred near Satilla Street on Monday afternoon at approximately 2:48 p.m.
Officers responded to a drive-by shooting near the Bridge Creek Apartments.
The incident resulted in injuries to two individuals, one of whom was treated and released, while the other was taken to a hospital for further treatment.
The gunman identified as Corey Richardson was taken into custody on aggravated assault charges. More charges are pending, and authorities have obtained information on the other two individuals involved.
In response to the incident, all schools in the Ben Hill County School District were placed on lockdown to ensure the safety, of staff and students.
Ben Hill County Schools has also announced that they are moving Georgia Milestones testing in grades 3-8 to begin next Tuesday, May 7, 2024.
This incident follows an after-prom shooting in the 300 block of East Pine Street that resulted in one fatality and three injuries early Sunday. Additionally, the City of Fitzgerald announced via social media a curfew for minors under the age of 17, effective from midnight until 6 a.m. on any given day until further notice.
