Suspect arrested, hospitalized after shots fired during standoff with deputies, officers in Poulan
POULAN, Ga. – Sheriff Don Whitaker has confirmed that a suspect has been arrested and hospitalized for a self-inflicted gunshot wound after an hours-long standoff with exchange of gunfire from both law enforcement and the suspect on Sunday evening.
The incident occurred on Hickory Street in Poulan in Worth county.
Officers with Poulan Police Department initially responded to a domestic violence 911 call.
The suspect reportedly fired several shots at deputies and one of the deputies returned fire. No one was hit by gunfire.
The suspect was instructed to drop his weapon, but failed to follow the deputies commands which resulted in additional response from other agencies.
The suspect then barricaded himself inside his home which resulted in a response from SWAT team to enter the residence.
The suspect was later discovered and recovered with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head inside his bedroom.
He was arrested and hospitalized for treatment of his injuries.
Sheriff Whitaker did not name the suspect and said that the GBI has taken over the investigation.
