Suspect arrested and in custody after argument results in shooting incident at ‘The Whistle’

ALBANY, Ga. – On August 19, 2025, around 2:30 P.M. officers responded to 713 S Slappey Blvd (The Whistle), in reference to a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers learned that two males were inside the store when they got into an argument and fight about a slot machine.

The suspect, identified as Marcus Newberry (66) walked out of the store, and the victim, Gregory Hightower (42) walked out shortly after. Newberry then shot Hightower outside the store front.

Newberry was taken into custody and interviewed by investigators. The victim was taken to Phoebe Putney Hospital and is currently in critical condition.

Newberry was charged with Aggravated Assault- Firearm and Possession of a Firearm during certain crimes. He was taken to the Dougherty County Jail.
