Sumter Co. students attend GSW Education Day Basketball Game

AMERICUS, Ga. – It is Education Day so all the students of Sumter County hopped on a school bus and came here for a field trip to enjoy some GSW basketball and keep the energy high this afternoon.

Since 2016, Georgia Southwestern has hosted an Education Day game, where Sumter County students get to attend a game during school hours.

The kids were full of energy and excitement, cheering for the Hurricanes men’s team.

They enjoyed plenty of entertainment, including games on the jumbotron and watching their teachers compete.

“It’s a great day for them. They get to get away from the classroom for a day, come out, and have fun. You know, this has been all the fun activities as you get to see their teachers get out and do these fun things. So, just a brain break for them,” said Elzie Marshall, Teacher.

Now, onto the game between GSW and Middle Georgia.

It was a tight back-and-forth for most of the first half, with neither team able to pull ahead.

Middle Georgia built a 10-point lead with just three minutes remaining, but the kids cheered the canes on, hitting some big shots to bring them within one.

Despite their effort, GSW fell short, losing a close one, 80-79.

“It was a great atmosphere. You know, it’s just cool to have these kids out in an environment like this, you know. And, so, I’m glad we were able to do it. Just, you know, unfortunately, we weren’t able to get the win,” said Aaron Coombs, GSW Men’s Basketball Head Coach.

GSW Men’s Basketball Team’s next game is on the road.

At Flagler College Saturday.
