Sumter Co.’s first ever Kids Bike Fest takes off this Saturday

AMERICUS, Ga. – Now, let’s take a ride over to Sumter county, as this Saturday the fire department is teaming up with other companies to host the first Kids Bike Fest.

The event will take place at Sumter County Primary School from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

The fire department, in collaboration with River Valley Regional and Sumter Cycling, aims to promote bike safety and encourage kids to stay active. Walmart has supported the event by providing bikes for prizes.

Kids will enjoy snacks, games, and various accessories, along with obstacle courses to test their skills in a safe environment.

Bianca Ritchey, with the Sumter County Fire Department, discusses the purpose of the initiative and its significance to the community.

“We actually saw a need in our area. We’ve had several children that were hurt, fallen off bikes with head injuries. We needed to start teaching about helmet safety and bike safety and how to properly ride. Unfortunately, with COVID we had a whole generation that wasn’t taught correctly on a batch of safety facts that we’re trying to make sure we reach those children now, and teach them the correct way to do things…” said Bianca Ritchey, Sumter County Fire Department Safety.

“Sumter Cycling and the River Valley Regional Commission, along with the fire department here, have partnered to put this event together just to really encourage children to get out and get more active and, get safer on their bicycles,” said Sue Hite & John Morgan, River Valley Regional & Sumter Cycling.
