Sowega Council on Aging’s Summer Regional Senior Resource Fair

COLQUITT, Ga. – The Sowega Council on Aging (SCOA) provides seniors with vital resources they need for healthy and independent living.

Citizens in Miller county gathered at First Baptist Church for the Summer Regional Senior Resource Fair. The event aimed to connect seniors with resources designed to enhance their quality of life.

“The Senior Resource Fair has not always been a regular opportunity in Southwest Georgia. Of course, the pandemic changed that a little bit. So, this year, 2024, is really the first opportunity we’ve had to actually go back to having single farmers markets. And, as a part of our Senior Farmers Market, we are also doing a Senior Resource Fair. To be able to share information with some of our seniors, make sure that the communities are aware of what services are out there,” said Kimberly Smith, Operations Manager, Sowega Council on Aging.

The Sowega Council on Aging serves as an aging and disability resource connection, offering assessments, referrals for homemaker and personal care services, and home modifications for seniors in southwest Georgia.

Kimberly Smith, Operations Manager for the Sowega Council on Aging, stresses the importance of making these resources available to those in need.

“So, this really is our fourth and our final Senior Farmers Market and Resource Fair. And, so, we’ve had some vendors that have actually gone through all four with us. We started in may up in Albany, Georgia, and culminated here in Miller county in Colquitt, Georgia, as a part of that. And, so, a lot of the vendors are, of course, from healthcare professionals. A lot of them are from senior living resources. A lot of them are like hospice. For those adults that are 65 or older and or their caretakers, to be able to know that as you transition into different phases of your life or different situations, that there are resources, there are persons within communities. May not necessarily be in your community, but service in your community that can offer something that can help you as you go through whatever that process is,” said Smith.

Those with inquiries can contact the Sowega Council on Aging for assistance.

“At Sowega Council on Aging, we’re really a one-stop shop. We service 14 counties in Southwest Georgia. And, so, for any services, even making connections with some of the resources or the vendors that are here, you would contact us through our 1-800 number and our number is 1-800-282-6612,” said Smith.
