SOWEGA Birthworkers Collective hosts Milk and Color event for infant nursing awareness
ALBANY, Ga. – In recognition of infant nursing awareness month, a special event was hosted to support and educate mothers in the community.
The SOWEGA Birthworkers Collective hosted their “Milk and Color” adult coloring event, aimed at educating the community – both women and men – on infant nursing and to support mothers with lactation.
“Today is the “Milk and Color.” Is basically an event that we wanted to encourage people to come out in color with us because coloring is relaxing, it’s calming, just for you to de-stress for the most part. And, bring awareness to breastfeeding, chest feeding,” said Phylicia Price, full spectrum doula.
The collective offers a variety of educational classes and support groups, serving as a valuable resource for the community. Additionally, they have a distinguished team of doulas specializing in areas such as fertility, birth, and perinatal grief and loss.
“But, it is a way that a mom and a baby combine and also it can reduce breast cancer. We try to incorporate that as a preventative care and to keep all women educated on the fact that the body produces exactly and everything that your baby needs,” said Cassenda Nelson, doula & breast cancer educator.
Phylicia Price, a full spectrum doula with the SOWEGA Birthworkers Collective, emphasizes that infant nursing is a natural and beautiful experience.
“Sometimes, we take in things and we pump and dump right? It’s okay if you take in things that are educational that you can spread awareness. So, we all need to be made aware. We are aware about things in a grocery store and we can go down the aisle and we can point to those things. So, we need to be aware about the things that we can get from our bodies. It’s natural, people make it very natural to look at a body and say, oh, that is a beautiful way, hey, can you look at the beauty of the fact that you can produce milk? That is beauty. And, we want to make people aware of their beauty and not be ashamed of it because it’s what we’re here to do,” said Price.
