Southwell Medical announces renaming of Sylvia Barr Center to Memory and Wellness Center during Holiday Business Event

Southwell Medical staff and community members gathered for a ribbon cutting to announce the renaming of the Sylvia Barr Center

Tifton, Ga. (12/3/25) – Southwell Medical hosted the Adel–Cook County Chamber of Commerce’s Christmas Business After Hours on December 2, while making an announcement regarding the facility’s geriatric psychiatric unit.

The event included a ribbon cutting to formally unveil the new name of the Sylvia Barr Center, which will now be known as the Memory and Wellness Center. The name change is intended to more clearly reflect the services the inpatient unit provides, where seniors with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and other behavioral and mental health needs receive specialized treatment and support.

Remarks were shared by Heather Green, President of the Adel–Cook County Chamber of Commerce; Mark Kimball, Chief Operating Officer of Southwell Medical; Amanda Ramshead, Director of Behavioral Health Services; and Chase Daughtrey, Southwell Board Member.

In his remarks, Kimball emphasized the strength and growth of the Southwell Medical campus as a whole. He highlighted exceptional patient and resident satisfaction scores, recent Centers of Excellence designations within the surgery center, and the ongoing focus on high-quality care and service delivery across all departments. Kimball noted that the Memory and Wellness Center is one of several units contributing to the campus’s mission of providing comprehensive, community-centered healthcare.

Daughtrey spoke about his pride in the campus and the direction Southwell Medical continues to move. He shared that as a board member, he sees firsthand the work being done to evaluate new services, expand access to care, and strengthen resources for local families.

The planned installation of a commemorative plaque honoring the late Sylvia Barr was also announced during the ceremony. Barr was a longtime civic leader and dedicated member of the Pilot Club of Adel. When the original facility opened in 2012, a garden was named in her memory. The new plaque will hang in the courtyard at the current facility.

Ramshead shared that Sylvia Barr’s legacy remains deeply rooted in the Center’s mission.

“Renaming our facility as the Memory and Wellness Center allows us to better reflect the services we provide, but our commitment to honoring Mrs. Barr will never change. Her dedication to the Adel community lives on here every day. We look forward to a bright future as we continue serving seniors living with dementia, Alzheimer’s, and other mental health challenges, with our new name but with the same excellent care and compassion,” Ramshead said.
