South Georgia Weather Authority Forecast: August 12, 2025
Good coverage of afternoon scattered showers and t’storms into mid-week. Rain chances drop off and turns drier and hotter this weekend. Heat index may approach 100°-105° by then.
In the tropics, Tropical Storm Erin has been a bit more disorganized today as it encounters drier air and cooler water temperatures. Erin is still forecast to become the first Hurricane, then Major Hurricane of the season by the weekend as it passes north of the Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. Erin is forecast to continue general westward motion stirred along southern periphery of Azores or Bermuda high pressure ridge, but there has been a slight nudge southward in track, so Erin may have more of an impact to portions of the Antilles. The longer Erin remains weaker, the further south in latitude it tracks meaning it may not recurve as early as prior predictions. The environment over the SW Atlantic Ocean is and will become very favorable for further strengthening. A weakness in the high pressure ridge and a re-curve of the storm is still forecast, but remember there are a lot of atmospheric players that can change 7-10 days out which is why there is inherently much uncertainty and very limited forecast skill beyond that timeframe. Stay tuned.
