SGTC hosting Homecoming, Alumni, Sophomore Day Celebration

    Homecoming, sophomore and Alumni Day set for Saturday, February 28 at SGTC.

AMERICUS, Ga. – South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) is celebrating over 75 years of success as an educational institution.  In honor of this proud past and promising future, the college will be hosting a Homecoming/Alumni/Sophomore Day Celebration on Saturday, February 28th in the James S. Peters gymnasium in conjunction with the Jets and Lady Jets basketball games and Sophomore Day recognition.  The public is invited to attend this free event.  Games start at 1 p.m.

    This is a black out event and all SGTC supporters are encouraged to wear Black.  Free black t-shirts (as long as supplies last) will be given out at the door and free tickets for door prizes will also be given out.  Scoops Ice Cream truck and other vendors will be on hand for individuals to purchase sweets to go with the free hamburger and hotdog lunch with the trimmings.

   All South Georgia Technical College current students, faculty and staff, alumni, former faculty and staff, and former SGTC basketball players and coaches are encouraged to come out and join in the celebration.  The 2025 – 2026 Lady Jets and Jets sophomores will be recognized between the two basketball games around 2:30 p.m. Alumni and former faculty and staff will be spotlighted during the half-time of the Jets ball game and family friendly activities are also scheduled.

   A special free basketball skills clinic will be held that Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon for boys and girls ages 8 – 14.  Space is limited to 25 participants.  The clinic will be led by Jets Assistant Coach Stephen Birchfield and members of the Jets basketball team.  Learn elite skills including dribbling, shooting and defense.  To sign up contact Coach Birchfield at Stephen.birchfield@southgatech.edu or 229-931-2025.

    Following the Basketball Skills Clinic activities, the Homecoming/Alumni Day Celebration will kick-off at 12:15 p.m. with a free Hot Dog and Hamburger cookout and Tailgate event sponsored by the Sumter County Chamber of Commerce and Imerys Refracturing Minerals.   SGTC alumni that would like to set up individual tailgating events in designated areas should contact SGTC Vice President of Student Affairs Eulish Kinchens, ekinchens@southgatech.edu.

     The tailgating event will lead into the Lady Jets basketball team facing off against the Albany Technical College Titans at 1 p.m. The Jets will take to the court at 3 p.m. against the Albany Tech Titans following the Sophomore Day recognition of the 2025 – 2026 Jets and Lady Jets sophomores.

    SGTC faculty, staff and students will be enjoying a number of activities during the week leading up to Homecoming with Monday – Hat Day; Tuesday – Twin Day; Wednesday – Denham Day; and Thursday – School Colors Day.  All faculty and staff are asked to support the Saturday – Blackout Day by wearing black to cheer o the Jets and Lady Jets at the game.
