Sewage Sludge Spill at North Water Pollution Control Plant in Vienna
VIENNA, Ga. – The City of Vienna has issued a public notice regarding a sewage sludge spill that occurred on February 12, 2026, at the Vienna North Water Pollution Control Plant, located at 100 Plant Road.
According to city officials, the spill happened after an SBR3 waste pump was accidentally left on, causing an overflow. The incident resulted in an estimated 131,872 gallons of sludge flowing into waters of the state, including an unnamed tributary and Pannahatchee Creek.
City crews responded by placing sand dams in a nearby drainage ditch to help prevent additional material from reaching the waterway. Sludge is currently being pumped from the affected tributary and transported back to the North Water Pollution Control Plant for reentry into the system.
Officials report that approximately 171,000 gallons have been pumped from state waters so far. Cleanup efforts remain underway, including vacuuming visible material and spreading lime in impacted areas where necessary.
The Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) and the local health department have been notified in accordance with the city’s LAS Permit #GAJ020167. Upstream and downstream water monitoring is also being conducted.
This notice serves as official public notification within the jurisdiction served by the City of Vienna North Water Pollution Control Plant.
