Sen. Ossoff delivering federal resources to strengthen Georgia agriculture

TIFTON, Ga. – It’s a big day for the University of Georgia’s Tifton Campus as Senator Jon Ossoff has announced millions in funding for agriculture research.

Georgia’s Senator announced early Friday afternoon the allocation of over $3 million dollars for establishing what’s known as a precision agriculture laboratory.

“Precision Agriculture may not be a term with which many are familiar, but it is the future of American agriculture, and it’s essential to our food supply and to our economic competitiveness. This is the development and deployment of technologies to reduce costs for farmers and to improve yields and quality of our agricultural products,” said Sen. Jon Ossoff, Georgia (D).

That wasn’t the only funding secured for UGA.

As another one million dollars is being allocated to upgrade the University of Georgia’s Tifton Veterinary Diagnostic and Investigational Laboratory.

Tifton Campus Assistant Dean, Michael Toews tells us it’s going to be a benefit not only to farmers, but livestock as well.

“This is really, really an important day for UGA not just on campus, and for south Georgia growers. The Tifton campus is home to so much of the agricultural operations here in South Georgia. And, to have this kind of investment allows us to show the latest and greatest and to be able to do demonstrations for Georgia growers, not just on the plant side, but the animal side as well,” Dr. Michael Toews.

But…this isn’t money meant to further research.

As Senator Ossoff puts it, it’s an investment in Southwest Georgia.

“It’s crucial that we be investing not just in the big cities and major metros, but in rural communities across Georgia. Agriculture remains Georgia’s number one industry, and so much of it happens here in south Georgia,” said Sen. Ossoff.

With the $4 million dollars in funding, the investment will benefit communities, farmers, and even livestock here in the Peach State.

Toews says the university wanted the investment to lure cooperating partners and industries to the Friendly City.
