Seasonal pet safety reminders for the holidays
ALBANY, Ga. – As families gather to celebrate the holidays, it is important for pet owners to take a few extra precautions to keep four-legged family members safe amid the festivities.
Many traditional holiday foods can be dangerous for pets. Chocolate, cooked bones, fatty meats, and rich leftovers can cause digestive issues or more serious health problems for both dogs and cats. Foods seasoned with onions, garlic, or heavy spices should also be kept out of reach, as even small amounts can be harmful.
Holiday decorations can create hidden hazards around the home. Electrical cords, ornaments, tinsel, ribbons, and wrapping paper may be tempting for curious pets to chew or swallow, which can lead to choking risks, intestinal blockages, or electrical injuries.
Seasonal plants are another concern during the holidays. Poinsettias, mistletoe, holly, and lilies can cause stomach upset, drooling, vomiting, or more severe reactions if ingested. Lilies are especially dangerous for cats and can be life-threatening even in small amounts.
With guests coming and going, pet owners are encouraged to make sure doors, gates, and fences are secure to prevent pets from slipping outside. Creating a quiet, pet-friendly space away from busy gatherings can also help reduce stress and keep animals calm.
Keeping a close eye on pets, offering pet-safe treats, and sticking to normal feeding routines can help minimize risks during the holidays. A little extra awareness goes a long way toward ensuring pets stay safe, comfortable, and happy all season long, because pets are family too.
