Phoebe surgeon’s gaming fundraiser for Children’s Miracle Network’s Extra Life campaign
ALBANY, Ga. – Phoebe’s Dr. Langer and the Nerd Store combine gaming and health care in an unexpected way.
Dr. Jason Langer, a general surgeon at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, is a leading expert with extensive experience using the da Vinci Surgical System. He performs delicate, minimally invasive procedures that have improved, and even saved, many patients’ lives.
Outside the operating room, Dr. Langer applies his precision and focus to crafting intricate miniature figures for the tabletop war game Warhammer 40k.
“It’s a game called Warhammer, you have plastic miniatures you put together and you paint however you want. It’s a great way to have a lot of creativity. And, then, you basically put them on the board and move them and have a good time just kind of playing and just meeting a lot of new people. This is just the local community here. I’ve met people from across the nation, even across the world, in different tournaments playing this game. The time and effort to put into these, there’s a couple of them that I’ve put like two weeks in just on one model. So you put a lot of time and effort into it,” said Dr. Jason Langer, Phoebe general surgeon.
Dr. Langer has partnered with the Nerd Store of Albany to host a 24-hour gaming marathon supporting the Children’s Miracle Network’s Extra Life campaign. The event brings together gamers, creators, and artist, uniting them in a shared effort to support their local communities.
“Extra Life game day is a 24 hour marathon of basically anybody playing games, raising money for local Children’s Miracle Network. We’re raising ours for Phoebe. Everything we raise is going to stay local. And, we’ve got a long 24 hours ahead of us to go,” said Dr. Langer.
Dr. Langer also highlights the positive impact of video games and tabletop games like Warhammer 40k.
“So, I always joke that I’ve gotten quicker with math when it comes to this, because you have to do a lot of quick math on your feet. That plus the creativity. It’s a good art outlet for art. It’s just a different canvas. So, it always helps with creativity. We make stories and backgrounds for a lot of these characters. It’s just a great escape. Kids enjoy it all the way up to big adults. You know, we all really have a lot of fun,” said Dr. Langer.
All funds raised will stay at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital to support programs and services for local pediatric and NICU patients.
“Our goal is to raise $6,000 for the local Children’s Miracle Network. We’re at about $2,000 now, so we still have a way to go. But you can donate on the Extra Life page and just look for the Phoebe group or my name Jason Langer, and then donate and help us out,” said Dr. Langer.
