Phoebe Sumter introduces Mako 4 Smart Robotics for Total Knee and Hip Replacement

AMERICUS, Ga. – Phoebe Sumter Medical Center (PSMC) has expanded its robotic surgery capabilities by providing total knee and hip replacements using Mako 4 SmartRobotics™. This innovative technology expands access to advanced orthopaedic care for patients in and around Sumter County and transforms the way total knee and hip replacements are performed by assisting surgeons, leading to a more personalized surgical experience.

Mako 4 SmartRobotics™ uses 3D CT-based planning combined with AccuStop™ haptic technology, allowing surgeons to create a customized surgical plan tailored to each patient’s unique anatomy before entering the operating room. During surgery, the robotic arm assists the surgeon in executing that plan with a high level of precision, which can contribute to better outcomes such as less pain and quicker recovery times, helping patients return to the activities they love sooner.

“With the Mako 4 system, I’m able to confirm my approach and make real-time adjustments while guiding the robotic arm to execute my intended surgical plan. It’s exciting to offer this transformative technology as part of our joint replacement services and to bring this level of precision to total knee and hip replacement for our patients,” said John Fennessy, MD, Orthopaedic Surgeon at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center.

Total knee replacements in the United States are expected to increase by 85 percent between 2020 and 2030. Mako 4 Total Knee combines Stryker’s advanced robotic technology with the clinically successful Triathlon® Total Knee System, enabling surgeons to plan with increased precision and accuracy compared to manual techniques and providing a more predictable surgical experience. Total hip replacements in the United States are expected to increase by 71% between 2020 and 2030. Mako 4 SmartRobotics™ for Total Hip is a treatment option for adults who suffer from degenerative joint disease of the hip.

“We are honored to bring Mako 4 SmartRobotics technology to Phoebe Sumter and to the community we serve. This investment reflects our continued commitment to expanding advanced, high-quality care close to home, so patients don’t have to travel far to receive the latest innovations in orthopaedic surgery,” said Carlyle Walton, President of Phoebe Sumter Medical Center.

“This technology not only supports our surgeons, but it also enhances the overall patient experience. From pre-surgical planning through recovery, Mako 4 SmartRobotics aligns with our focus on safety, quality, and outcomes, while supporting efficient care delivery for our patients and care teams,” said Kelsey Reed, Chief Nursing Officer and Chief Operating Officer of Phoebe Sumter Medical Center.

The purchase of the Mako 4 SmartRobotics™ system was made possible through the Georgia HEART tax credit program, which allows Georgia taxpayers to redirect their state income tax dollars to support rural hospitals including Phoebe Sumter.

“Georgia HEART plays a critical role in helping Phoebe Sumter invest in advanced technology that directly benefits our patients. Because of this program and the generosity of donors, we’re able to bring innovative services to our community, strengthening access to high-quality care right here at home,” said Katherine Council, Director of the Phoebe Sumter Foundation.

To celebrate the introduction of Mako 4 SmartRobotics™ for Total Knee and Hip replacement, Phoebe Sumter held a MAKO 4 Open House on Friday afternoon in the hospital lobby. Community members, physicians, staff, and partners attended and to see the robotic system in action and learn more about how this advanced technology is enhancing orthopaedic care in Americus.
