Phoebe announces new program Fresh RX aimed at helping those with diabetes

Phoebe and Flint River Fresh partner together to help those with diabetes

ALBANY, Ga. – Managing a condition like diabetes can be tough as is, but it’s even more difficult without the proper knowledge.

CBS 44’s Brian Roche tells us what one major health system is doing to help close the gap.

A new program is starting for the Phoebe Health System…one that hopes to provide aid and structure to those living with diabetes.

It’s known as Fresh RX, a joint effort between the Phoebe Health System, and Flint River Fresh.

With the new initiative being headed by Phoebe Primary Care’s Dr. Derek Heard who says it’s for those who have diabetes who may be uninsured.

“They may not have optimal control over their diabetes, and so what we’re hoping to achieve with the Fresh RX program, is to get them exposure to fresh produce and fruit, so as to get better control of their diabetes,” said Dr. Heard.

Here is how the program works…Flint River Fresh will help to deliver fresh produce to those in the program every two weeks…as well as access to nutritionists for a better grasp.

Dr. Heard says because of the future track of diabetes in America, now is as important as ever.

“It’s extremely vital. We know that in the state of Georgia, there’s about 12.4 percent of the population that’s diabetic or pre-diabetic. In the United States, we know that by 2050, there’s gonna be a third of the population that’s diabetic or pre-diabetic. So, we have to get in front of this now,” said Dr. Heard.

But, more than anything, it’s helping those who aren’t insured gain just a little more ground.

“We also know that if you’re uninsured, there’s a high likelihood that there’s an issue with getting access to fresh fruits and vegetables. We know that a lot of people in Albany live in food deserts, and we’re really hoping that we can bridge that gap with this,” said Dr. Heard.

As the Fresh RX program continues its guidance over the next few months, Dr. Heard is hoping that people who have diabetes will be able to live a healthier life.

Dr. Heard says the Fresh RX program will yield results in six months.
