Phoebe & Albany Tech tour Living and Learning Community construction site
ALBANY, Ga. – Members of Albany Technical College (ATC) were given the chance to tour the still under construction Living and Learning Community, set to be completed and opened later this year.
The Living and Learning Community was thought of by Phoebe president, Scott Steiner, and Albany Technical College president, Dr. Anthony Parker before his passing in 2023.
Steiner spoke with us about building up the nursing program at Albany Tech…
“…We take it seriously. We employ 5,500 people here in southwest Georgia. And, we try to continue to innovate and bring more jobs and more strength to the economy here. We love to keep things local. And, hopefully people see that in the way these building projects go and as we hire more healthcare workers…” said Scott Steiner, President, Phoebe Health System.
The healthcare industry is still seeing an ever present staffing shortage of nurses…
With the state of Georgia needing another 30 thousand.
Commissioner Greg Dozier with the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) says that touring the facility shows a lot of promise for Albany Tech students moving forward.
“I think today represents so much when you look at the partnership between Phoebe and Albany Tech. You look at what the local community’s commitment is to the students of the future, and the opportunities they have to make a difference. When you see students come to our technical colleges and work with a future employer, and know they have a place to make a difference is so exciting,” said Greg Dozier, Commissioner, Technical College System of Georgia.
And, for current Albany Tech president, Dr. Emmett Griswold, being able to give back to the community in such a big way by helping up to 200 nurses at a time.
“This facility is going to be something that we can celebrate, and we can also join in as a community to not only educate and produce more nurses but be a vibrant part of the downtown Albany element,” said Dr. Emmett Griswold, President, Albany Technical College.
But, with the projected completion date still being eyed for fall 2024, everyone is hoping for a massive impact in southwest Georgia.
Especially on those looking for their first career out of high school.
“Nursing and healthcare careers; they’re not easy jobs, but man they are fulfilling, they fill your soul. And that’s why we’re looking for young people. We’re looking for people to make a difference,” said Steiner.
As construction continues on the facility, Steiner says the finished center will be a major focal point in helping ease the nursing shortage.
Albany Technical College previously only accepted 40 nursing students in a year.
