Moultrie native casts role in “The Six Triple Eight” Netflix film

MOULTRIE, Ga. – Netflix released their original movie, “The Six Triple Eight,” on December 20, a film featuring an all-star cast that includes Kerry Washington and Oprah Winfrey.

Based on true events, the movie tells the story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only all-African American Women’s Army Corps Unit to serve overseas during World War II.

The battalion played a vital role in sorting and delivering a massive backlog of mail to soldiers. The film also explores the challenges these trailblazing women faced, confronting racism and sexism both within the military and in society.

Among these extraordinary women was Willie Belle Irving-Partridge, a Moultrie native. After completing basic training, Partridge was chosen from the thousands of enlistees to join the elite battalion of 855 women.

Tasked with clearing over two years’ worth of undelivered mail, the 6888th was given just six months to complete the monumental assignment. Remarkably, they accomplished it in just three months, raising the spirits of soldiers and civilian workers alike.

In June 2023, Moultrie Mayor William McIntosh presented her daughter with a proclamation honoring Partridge’s legacy. During a special ceremony, the mayor and city council celebrated her selfless and patriotic contributions to the nation.

On June 16 of 2023 – what would have been Partridge’s 100th birthday – was officially declared in her honor.
