Men United and Sylvester-Worth County Family Connection Partnership distributes free hot meals
SYLVESTER, Ga. – Men United and the Sylvester-Worth County Family Connection joined forces to provide free meals for families in need this holiday season.
“It started back in 2018 with Men United. We used to do a Thanksgiving meal. Our president, Mr. Larry Johnson, passed away. So, three years ago, me and Mr. Ray and Lisa of the Connection decided that we are going to start it back up in honor of Larry,” said Greg Walker, member, Men United.
Volunteers worked tirelessly as they assembled plates filled with hot and hearty meals to hand out to families as cars lined up at the Mary Alice Shipp Center.
Community leaders, including local officials, were also a part of the effort, personally delivering meals to those unable to make it to the event.
“We have a chicken leg quarter that’s cooked by Jackson Soul Food here in town, some of the best chicken you’ll ever eat. We also have green beans, potato salad, we have rolls, and we have a dessert. It’s all about the community and family, especially this time of the year when giving is the season. And, there’s people out there that love you that you don’t even know,” said Ray Humphrey, Georgia American Legion Department, former Vice Commander.
The “Feeding the Community” event continues to grow each year, with organizers stating they plan to keep this tradition alive for years to come.
“We do this every year. Greg and I, he is always there for me and I’m there for him. We do this for the community. This is our third year since we started. But we do like to get our police involved, our fire departments involved. They’re out here today helping us deliver meals to those in the county and the communities that can’t come to us. So, we are taking care of them too,” said Humphrey.
Organizers say this event wouldn’t be possible without the support of their sponsors.
“Well, I would like to thank everyone that came out. Our sponsors, South Georgia Banking, Colony Bank, American Legion, Men United, Family Connection, and Pruitt Health. Especially Jackson Soul Food,” said Walker.
