Man arrested in Tift Ave. homicide, confesses to choking and setting victim on fire
ALBANY, Ga. – Around 4:58 am Friday morning, Albany officers were dispatched to 419 West Tift Avenue following a call from 39-year-old Romeigus Darnell Benjamin, confessing to choking a man to death and setting him on fire.
Upon arrival, officers found 68-year-old Edward James Gilmore deceased inside the residence, with burn marks on his body. Benjamin was apprehended and admitted to the murder during interrogation.
The altercation reportedly originated from Gilmore contacting the police about Benjamin earlier that evening. Benjamin faces murder charges and has been taken to the Dougherty County Jail.
