Lt. Governor Burt Jones, Senator Freddie Powell-Sims, other leaders attend HBCU fall tour at Albany State University
ALBANY, Ga. – Lt. Governor Burt Jones, Senator Freddie Powell-Sims, and other community leaders take part in a significant community tour of Albany State University.
Earlier in the month of September, Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones and Senator Sonya Halpern announced a fall tour of Historically Black Colleges and Universities across the state of Georgia.
All 10 of Georgia’s public and private HBCU’s will be engaged in these conversations, including Atlanta University Center, Albany State University, Fort Valley State University, and Savannah State University.
The tour includes a walkthrough of Albany State University, where the group will interact with academic leaders, students, faculty and staff, and community to discuss the impact of elevated education in the region.
“Albany State is somebody that we, the state of Georgia, want to partner with. I can tell you right now, when you see a university system across the state that’s losing student enrollment, and then all the sudden Albany State is down here in southwest Georgia has gained enrollment, it speaks to the leadership that you have here. With you being 7,000 strong in undergraduates and with 3% growth, those are positive things,” said Lt. Governor Burt Jones, Lieutenant Governor of Georgia.
The tour marks the significant commitment to the higher education system of Georgia as well as the importance and prosperity of HBCU’s not only in southwest Georgia, but across the state.
Senator Halpern stated, “Our Historically Black Colleges and Universities are treasure troves of talent, innovation, and promise. Our visit to these esteemed institutions not only recognizes their remarkable legacies but also underscores a commitment to acknowledging and elevating their distinctive programs and contributions. Together, we will investigate avenues for enhancing our support for HBCU’s, fostering a more robust and prosperous future for Georgia.”
“We want to partner with Albany State, as well as a lot of the other universities, and technical schools, and other systems here in not just southwest Georgia, but all over the state. Because there is a lot of opportunities out there for young people. We’ve just got to have the partnerships with our higher education institutions and make things happen for everybody, said Lt. Governor Burt Jones, Lieutenant Governor of Georgia.
