Liberty Expressway to Remain Open

ALBANY, Ga. — The City would like to provide up-to-date information following a reassessment of the Liberty Expressway. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has begun using a salt and calcium chloride mixture that has greatly improved conditions on our state routes.

Due to these improved conditions, access to the Liberty Expressway will not be closed this evening.

GDOT has also assured the City that crews will be coming back through to re-salt Liberty Expressway access points. Crews will also be reapplying the roadway treatment solution to the Liberty Expressway and ramps. Personnel will be riding the state routes through the night and applying the calcium chloride/brine solution as needed.

While the expressway will be open, we still urge the public to use extreme caution when driving on the roads.

Black ice is not visible, especially at night, and can create extremely dangerous conditions. This is especially true on portions of the road that receive shade throughout the day and on overpasses. These areas most likely did not warm up enough for the snow to melt and dissipate. With the expected extreme cold temperatures overnight, these areas will be extremely hazardous to drivers
until temperatures reach above freezing.

We ask that everyone use caution if you must be out on the roads, reduce your speed, and be safe.
