Lee Co. High School hosts annual hands-on career day by Metro Power

LEESBURG, Ga. – The Lee County School System is giving students a hands-on experience in multiple trade fields while potentially giving them a push towards a career.

Lee Co. High construction teacher John Wanner says that local company Metro Power has been working with the school system for the last few years…

With some getting inspiration for the careers.

“The purpose of public education is to prepare a workforce on the simple side. I see it from my side as workforce development,” said John Wanner, construction teacher, LCHS.

Students were given hands-on work with Metro Power.

And, for some, that could be the spark for their career as branch manager, Andy Kennedy tells us some of the Lee county students have come to work at Metro.

“It’s great. We enjoy getting to meet the kids and introduce them. And, it’s been great to watch them grow and develop over the years and we’ve had several come to work with us and start great careers here,” said Andy Kennedy, Branch Manager, Metro Power.

The career day is certainly different from others in that it shows trade schools and employment right out of high school is a viable option.

“A lot of these kids, they’ve been told their whole life, ‘you’ve got to go to college to be successful.’ But we’re showing them a different path, there’s value in going into trades. There’s a huge industry that wants to hire them, they can make money without having to be saddled with the debt from college and such,” said Dean Cutler, Dir. Program Support, Construction Ready.

And, the students we’re certainly enjoying the hands-on experience.

“When they open their doors, they’re inviting you in. They’re giving you the basics, they’re teaching you, they’re motivating you. And, it just creates a positive environment for everybody around,” said Jeremiah Coleman, Junior, LCHS.

With many of the students showing enthusiasm for multiple fields through metro power, the school system is showing there are more options after high school.

Wanner says that a hands-on career fair like the one the school system holds with Metro Power allows them to do something that simply couldn’t be done in the classroom.
