Lee Co. Commission to host public budget hearing
The meeting will be held at six o'clock at the T. Page Tharp Governmental Building on June 13th.
LEESBURG, Ga. – It’s the start of budget season for South Georgia governments and Lee County is up soon with their public hearing set to take place on June 13th.
We sat down with Lee County Commission Chairman, Billy Mathis Wednesday afternoon to talk about the budget of over 30 million dollars.
And, Mathis says one of the biggest priorities as always, is first response.
“Yeah the budget will be approximately 30 million dollars. And, the big ticket items are always the same; public safety is the biggest item. And, of course personnel overall is a huge item,” said Chairman Billy Mathis, Lee County Commission.
Some of the new additions will be over 35 new bodycams, five iPads for mobile dispatch, alongside two new dispatchers.
It’s part of Chairman Mathis’ belief that, with one of the best response times in the State of Georgia, the money is going to be very well spent.
“Everything now is just state-of-the-art. We were the first county in Georgia I believe to have the ability to text 9-1-1. And, we’re also now in the process of building new towers in Lee County so that coverage will be one hundred percent complete,” said Chairman Billy Mathis, Lee County Commission.
As the Chairman and the Lee County Commission prepare to hear from the public, they believe their sense of fiscally conservative spending is bringing up the value of the county.
“So we try hard to be fiscally conservative. We certainly buy the things we need, and we take care of public safety and those kinds of things, because we want to make sure the citizens are safe. So we don’t ever hold back when it comes to that kind of thing,” said Chairman Billy Mathis, Lee County Commission.
And if you live in the Lee County area, and you have questions or concerns about this coming year’s budget, there’s still time to register and have your voice heard during the public hearing.
The meeting will be held at six o’clock at the T. Page Tharp Governmental Building on June 13th.
