Kwanzaa Proclamation marks a growing celebration tradition in Albany
ALBANY, Ga. – And while we countdown the days till Christmas, the City of Albany is preparing to recognize another holiday as well.
The city and Dougherty County leaders will be holding a proclamation to celebrate the holiday of Kwanzaa.
This will be the third year in a row the city has celebrated the holiday.
We spoke with, SOWEGA Rising’s Sherell Byrd about celebrating the holiday and having the proclamation of Kwanzaa being a new, yearly tradition in Albany.
“Kwanzaa is not a widely celebrated event, but it is something that we are trying to bring to South Georgia so that people do understand that there is other ways in which you can really celebrate the rich culture of African Americans. And, Kwanzaa is a really unique way of doing that,” said Sherell Byrd, Executive Director, SOWEGA Rising.
Kwanzaa runs from December 26th to January 1st.
