Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful hosts Water Festival to educate Albany third graders

ALBANY, Ga. – Promoting environmental responsibility among the youth of the community. Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful proudly presents its engaging and educational Water Festival.

The Water Festival is a dynamic, hands-on educational event spanning two days, designed to provide third-grade students with a stimulating opportunity to learn about, appreciate, and investigate the multifaceted uses of water.

“The Water Festival was created over 30 years ago at the foundation of Keep-Albany Dougherty Beautiful. We’re the education arm of government so we do all things education surrounding water conservation and the importance of water. So we recognized that in conjunction with the school systems, when they’re learning about water in science classes, KADB decided that the Water Festival would be a good thing to re-emphasize what they were already learning. So, it is a way for our third graders to get out and get some hands-on experimential learning surrounding where their water comes from and just learn about all things water,” said Jwana Washington, Executive Director, Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful.

Approximately 500 students are set to engage in interactive water-centric activities, representing schools from throughout the Albany community during the two-day Water Festival.

“So, these third graders here today are learning about water conservation, where our water comes from, all the water that we have is all the water that we will ever have. Our hope is, is when they go home, they’ll be able to tell the parents about what they learned here today. So, third grade is just the prime opportunity for them to soak in all of this knowledge about water. And, then, hopefully one day they will grow up to be more conscientious of water and all of the different uses of water and where pollutants come from in the water and what not to do to put pollution in the water,” said Washington.

More than 500 students participated in the Water Festival including the following hands-on activities:

  • Agricultural Water Use
  • Mosquito Control
  • Watershed and the Life Ahead
  • Jeopardy! Conservation Edition
  • Wash, Wash, Wash Your Hands
  • Weather and You
  • Non-Point Source Pollution
  • Protecting Water Quality In Our Forests
