Interim City Manager named for Good Life City

ALBANY, Ga. – As Albany’s city manager gets set to leave the Good Life City, commissioners made a decision Tuesday morning on an interim successor.

Albany commissioners decided that Chief Financial Officer, Derrick Brown would fill in as Interim City Manager, with Carter’s departure later on in April.

Which will go a long way with the city’s upcoming annual budget meeting at the end of the spring.

“It’s certainly beneficial that I attend all of the budget meetings with the city manager and the departments, so I’m intimately familiar with the budget process, and what’s happening within each department. So, I’ve been directly involved in that any way,” said Derrick Brown, Interim City Manager, City of Albany.

While Brown begins his tenure as Interim City Manager, the position is at the center of controversy, as the city is investigating the death of Albany Public Works employee, Darrious Stephens from late spring.

Brown says that he plans to tackle any coming controversy.

“Any issues we have that are ongoing, I’ll enrich myself in those and other details I’m not familiar with, I’ll try to familiarize with those. But, I’ll just continue to follow through with the direction we’re going and try to follow through as best I can,” said Brown.

And, when looking forward to the immediate future, the upcoming annual budget for the city is looming large.

“When you have a $316 million budget, that will be the primary focus over the next few months. Trying to make sure we adopt a balanced budget by June 30th. I’m confident we’ll do that. I’ve already said to the departments, this will be the most challenging budget that I’ve been a part of. This will be the 9th budget I’ve been involved with,” said Brown.

While Brown hopes that he’s able to do well enough to where the interim tag is dropped, he’s looking forward to working on the city’s upcoming annual budget.

Current City Manager, Steven Carter’s last day is set for April 16th.
